Head Vet & Owner:  John Wright B.V.Sc

John was raised on a cattle property near Tamworth and has always had an interest in animals. He graduated from Sydney University in 1980 as a Pharmacist, and worked full time for 8 years. The calling for working with animals was too strong to resist, he left full time Pharmacy, and worked on his father’s cattle property for 3 years.  Realising his purpose in life, John started the 5 year full time degree of Veterinary Science at the University of Queensland, at the age of 32. During his studies, he and his wife, Sue, had 2 daughters (Courtney born in 2nd year Uni, and Alicia born in 4th year Uni).

After graduation, John realised that small animals were his calling. He started working at Salisbury Vet Surgery, and at its Branch practice in Inala – Skylark Street Vet. During this time, another daughter – Aimee was born. After 3 & ½ years, John’s boss retired, so he purchased the two practices. Concentrating his efforts into the Salisbury practice, Skylark Street Vet was sold.

Over the last 10 years, John knows that ongoing education is vital for a successful practice. He has attended 4 weeklong conferences (Dermatology in 1998, Senior Care in 2003, Surgery in 2007 and Feline Medicine & Surgery in 2009). He has also completed 3 year long correspondence courses (Feline Medicine in 2000, Surgery in 2001 and Radiology in 2005).

John’s interests lie in good medicine and surgery. He performs routine surgery as well as many orthopaedic (traumatic and correctional) cases.

When not at work, he is a home Handyman (typical male), rides his bike, and participates in the cycling charity events (Gold Coast 100k, Ipswich 100k and recently the Mt Coot-Tha - Clem 7 tunnel 85k event). He has two cats (Ally and Soxie), 2 guinea pigs (Bender and Cookie), one Wife (Sue), and 3 teenage daughters.

Senior Vet Nurse:  TeeJay

My name is TeeJay. I have been part of the Salisbury Vet team for 11 years now.  The care and respect that John shows as a boss and especially as a Vet has made me not ever want to leave.

Having previously worked at the Animal Welfare League for 3 years it’s clear to me that my passion lies in the care and wellbeing of all animals great and small.

I’m a proud Vegan and do my best at helping animals in my own way. You may even see me at a Rally or two.

My hobbies are vast and include music, movies, bushwalking, art, anything nature bound and cats …. I love my cats.

Vet Nurse:  Shelley

Vet Nurse:  Jennifer

My name is Jennifer Watt and I have worked as the "Casual" Vet Nurse for John for approximately 6 years.  Although not working and set day of the week you will see me from time to time.

I have just recently Graduated from TAFE with my Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in November 2009 after 4 years of Part Time Study.

A great amount of my spare time is dedicated to my hobby of breeding & showing my much loved Chihuahua's.  Weekends will find my family & I attending Dog Shows with great success, having been breeding & showing for over 25 years.  I am also a qualified Dog Judge which often sees me travelling interstate to officiate.

Hi My name is Shelley and I am a member of the Salisbury Vet Nursing Team.  I have been with the team over eight years now and love being able to help care for your very special family members. Animals are my passion and originally coming from a Financial Industry background I feel very fortunate to be able to have a career that I love.

I have been a Breeder of Cornish Rex Cats now for 26 years and was originally a client here at Salisbury for 15 years before I started working here. The teams dedication to your pets is second to none, which is why I guess we have lots of clients who travel quite a distance to see us.

I am a member of the Australian Veterinary Association's PETPEP Team. This is an education program aimed at school children from Prep to Year 3. We visit the schools to tell the children about what we do at the surgery and to promote  responsible pet care. I take one of my cats with me on the visits and he is quite comfortable having up to 150 children pat and touch him.

If you are a Friday client you will probably find me in the Grooming Room, I enjoy pampering your pet, be they cat or dog with a bath, haircut and bow. We offer a unique service option of Owner to Hold appointments for those pets who are a little nervous or for the clients who don't wish to leave their pets for a full day stay.
